A small group of Samohi Alumni held a mini-reunion Thursday August 29th on retired Fire Chief John Sturgess's classic new 38' cabin cruiser at Marina del Rey. Alumni Sturgess was kind enough to not only host the get together on his yacht and provide the "chow and grog" bur also took the group on an extensive harbor cruise of the marina. Attendees included Bill Delkner, Joe Eubanks, Jim White, Dale Welsh, Fred Williams and Jerry Alford. Unable to attend were Charlie Boyce (busy fishing in Sisters, Oregon), Don Cook, Steve Steere as well as Harry Kuhlmeyer. Incidentally Harry was the person who earlier informed everyone that THEY (based on age ??) were now "On the Offramp of Life" but accidentaly took an incorrect offramp himself and ended up at Saint Johns Medical Center undergoing an extensive eye examination!! As they say "a great time was had by all" and those unable to make the event were HUMUNGOUSLY berated (and lied about as well) I am attaching several photographs of attendees but many were such shady characters ( literally) that they did not photograph clearly.

Hello everyone,
Early this morning, at 2:25 a.m., our dad died. We were both with him the entire time, and our mom and Annie's husband John came soon after death. We all stayed with him and helped him through this journey.
The myeloma was the cause - it spread throughout his body, including to his kidneys, and that is what ultimately caused his death.
He was never alone in the last 3 days, between the two of us, mom, John, Uncle Don, Natasha, Cynthia, Bruce and Aldene Sellery, Kevin and Melissa Susman. We believe he knew we were all there, and his death was a very peaceful one.
Rather than flowers, we know that dad would prefer that you help support the research that is trying to find a cure for myeloma, a horrible disease. Here is their address:
International Myeloma Foundation
12650 Riverside Drive #206
North Hollywood, CA 91607
Tel: 1-800-452-2873

Thanks to you all for such wonderful messages and words of support. We read them all to dad, and it gave him great joy to know that you all cared so much about him.

Ruth passed away December 30, 2004
In good health still even though I will be 84 in December. Still travel and take trips to Vegas when I can. My Brother Willam Conner lives out near Barstow. He graduated the same time I did. I also love to garden and you can find me out in the yard most days. Stop by and say Hi.
I served in the U.S.Navy from Dec.l941 til Oct. l945; and then worked in the motion picture and television industry as a lighting gaffer until I retired at the age of 65. I have been an avid boater and fisherman all my life; and now my wife and I divide our time between our Palm Springs home and our condo in Marina del Rey.
I went to Caltech and spent the last two years there in the Navy V-12 program, after graduating and getting commissioned I went to Guam and joined a Seabee battalion. Harry Truman's bomb saved me from the Japanese invasion, which were designated for.
After getting a Master's degree at Caltech in 1948 I married Anne Armstrong, Beverly Hills 1942 and Stanford 1946. I spent my professional life in construction engineering on large projects, 25 with Bechtel, including fifteen years living in New Zealand, England and Saudi Arabia.
We have three children and nine grandchildren. Unfortunately Anne died of Lymphoma last May a month before our 53rd anniversary.
I always felt that I got an excellent start on my education at Samohi. My main hobbies, which I still enjoy are golf, duck hunting and fly fishing.

Benjamin F. (Ben) McKinney (Class of 1941) Frisco, TX and Gig Harbor, WA passed away on Friday, May 19, 2000
Born August 6, 1923 in Warren, PA, Mr. McKinney grew up in Santa Monica, CA; and married in 1947 to wife Shirley June (Marsden) McKinney. He also lived in Los Angeles, CA; San Francisco, CA; Dallas, TX; Indianapolis, IN; Tucson, AZ; and Westcliffe, CO.
Mr. McKinney was a prominent businessman, entrepreneur and patron of charitable causes for many years.
His business career in the metals industry spanned over 40 years. During this time, he was primarily associated with the Glass, Paint, and Battery Industries. In 1973 after 23 years with a well known Non-Ferrous Metals Refinery he formed his own company, Oxide and Chemical Corporation in Indiana. As Chairman and CEO until his retirement and sale of this company in 1990, he was credited with several patents along with serving as a Director of the LIA and a committee member for over 25 years In the Battery Council International.
The many charities that Mr. McKinney was associated with were always a private matter with him but he never turned away a request. Pride in what he accomplished was only surpassed by his love of his family, God and his service to his country.
He served with distinction in the U.S. Navy in WWII on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Guadalcanal, which was accredited with capturing a German submarine intact during World War II.
As an avid hunter, sport fisherman, and golfer, he participated in various clubs. He was a long time member at Highland Golf and Country Club, Country Club of Indianapolis, and a Charter Member of the Skyline Club.
When it came to his family, he was a loving and giving father and will he missed by them all. He is survived by his wife, Shirley June (Marsden) McKinney of Frisco, TX; Sisters, Marianne McKinney Pardee (Class of '43) (married to Doug Pardee - Class of '40) of Rancho Santa Fe, CA; and Betty Rosenquist of Williamsville, NY; Sons Jefty McKinney of Indianapolis, IN; and Damian McKinney of Long Beach, CA; along with his daughters Linda B. King of Indianapolis IN, Jacque Kirsh of Indianapolis IN, Michele Gentis (married to Ian Gentis - Class of 73) of Germantown TN, Shannon Phillips of Westcliffe CO, and Toni Henke of Frisco TX. Also 18 Grandchildren and 3 Great grandchildren.

My husband Cal & I celebrated our 60th in Feb. He went to be with the Lord in Nov. I have 2 lovely daughters, 5 grandsons, 1 grandaughter & 2 grandkids. Lots of wonderful memories. Glad I was a grad of this wonderful school.
Biggest undertaking, for me, recently was directing the hilarious 1938 play, "The Man Who Came to Dinner". I had not been this connected to theater since my Samohi days when I had a small role in a terrible senior play. I can't even remember the name of the play, but it was directed by Olive Morris, and had a lot of 'flag waving'. My first discovery when I 'volunteered' to direct "The Man Who Came to Dinner" was that it had 36 roles!! I quickly trimmed that to 17 parts. Eliminated the 10 choir boys, plus others. I live in a retirement community of 300+ residents and cast all the roles from this base. A 75 year old played the ingenue, etc. We rehearsed for 6 weeks and gave two performances for our residents in our on campus theater. I now am basking in the compliments. But once was enough...
I have 5 grandchildren now, two in college, two in high school and a new born just learning to walk.

Every time I receive my Viking News I plan to send new information, but don't get it done. This time I just put it dowm and decided not to procrastinate any longer. I just celebrated my 80th birthday with all my family and friends as I assume a lot of '43 alumni are doing. Audrey Phillips Curtis'44 and I had alway planned to be together on our 80th, but we decided to celebrate on our Nile River cruise in October instead. I keep busy here in Florida hoping to avoid more hurricanes. I am President of the Fort Myers Beach Art Association and exhibit locally. I also volunteer at the hospital, soup kitchen and church thrift shop. I am hoping the class of '43 will be having a reunion in 2008. Thanks to all the people who are responsible for getting the Viking News out to us.

I really enjoyed reading the email from 'kids' I knew in the 1940s. My wife, Marie Louise Hart-Penn, class of 1943, and I have been married almost 40 years and enjoy life as much as possible by those in middle 70s.. Some of my best friends were garnered from old John Adams Jr. High class of 1941. I switched to St. Monica's High in 1942, went into the USAAF, crashed in a B-17 in 1944, got out 1946, attended SMCC and USC and got my Masters in Social Work in 1952, worked five years at Norwalk (Metropolitan) State Hospital as a Senior Psychiatric Social Worker, transferred to the CA Dept. of Corrections as a Parole Officer and retired in 1976. I presently am collaborating with a web master at St. Monica's Parish uploading many pictures of old Santa Monica with narratives. My parents came to Santa Monica in 1905 and 1910 and mom saved a lot of old pictures which I am preparing to share. I will advise when the site is 'UP" and what its name will be. John H. 'Jack' Penn, Anyone I knew is surely invited to email me at jackpenn@msn.com.

Philip Toll Hill, Jr., (April 20, 1927 August 28, 2008 Phil Hill, American F1 Champion, Dies at 81 MONTEREY, California — Phil Hill, the first American to win the Formula 1 world driving championship, has died at age 81, but he'll be remembered for far more than his driving exploits. Hill popularized sports car racing in the U.S. during the 1950s and '60s, was instrumental in the rise of vintage car restorations in America, and had been an influential part of American car culture for more than 50 years.
Hill passed away on Thursday morning in Monterey, where he had been hospitalized following the Pebble Beach weekend August 16-17. He had been suffering from Parkinson's disease for some years, but had insisted on attending Monterey this year because his long-time racing friend Dan Gurney was being honored at The Quail. He enjoyed a long and storied career — culminating in the Formula 1 World Driving Championship in 1961 — during the most dangerous era of motorsports without suffering a single serious injury. He was 81.
Phil Hill was the first American to win a Formula 1 race, the first American to conquer the 24 Hours of Le Mans and one of only two Americans — Mario Andretti being the other — to be crowned F1 champion. Yet this glittering record was hardly the measure of the man. Hill also co-founded one of the country's most reputable restoration shops for vintage cars, regularly contributed stories to Road & Track and served perennially as a judge at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. He was both a legitimate player and an influential observer, and from his singular vantage point, he was uniquely able to instill in successive generations of Americans an appreciation for racing and the historic cars that were his lifelong passion.
Those who met him late in his life would find it hard to believe how handsome and powerful he'd been in his heyday, and the nervous agitation he customarily exhibited belied the courage required to brave the perils of the Carrera Panamericana, the Nürburgring Nordschleife, and the banking at Monza. In an age when Formula 1 is everything in the road racing world, Hill's three Grand Prix triumphs may seem paltry. But he also won three times at Le Mans. And don't forget the victories at Sebring and Daytona, in Can-Am and on the original Pebble Beach road course, not to mention the land speed records he set at Bonneville. And how many drivers can say they won their first race (in a supercharged MG TC on a half-mile oval) and their last race (at Brands Hatch in the Chaparral 2F)?
Raised in Santa Monica, Hill was one of the young, speed-happy Californians who discovered imported sports cars after World War II. But to Hill, a racecar was more than a mere mechanical contrivance. As a boy, he'd learned to love the majestic American classics of the prewar epoch, and he never lost his appreciation for how they worked and what they represented. A few years after Hill retired from racing, he teamed up with Ken Vaughn to create what was then the nation's most prestigious restoration firm.
During the next decade, Hill & Vaughn established the template — and set the standard — for the shops that proliferate to this day. Two of Hill's own cars won Best of Show honors at Pebble Beach. It's no coincidence that Hill served as a judge at this, the country's premier concours, no fewer than 40 times. Hill also collaborated with his great friend John Lamm to write scores of articles for Road & Track about the most memorable cars of the past century. Like Hill, these stories were honest without ever becoming accusatory, erudite without ever seeming pedantic. And as often as not, the cars he wrote about were analogues for Hill himself — rare classics never to be made again, but never to be forgotten. What this means to you: One of the most respected and well-liked drivers of the classic era, Phil Hill had much to do with the American car culture we know today. — Preston Lerner, Correspondent

Don Smith, and wife Lois (Gairich '45) are co-authors of a new book, just published, "IF IT AIN'T BROKE - BREAK IT!" The book describes in detail a Triad of new ideas for the way we govern ourselves. The ideas for Taxation, Entitlements and Health Care are revolutionary and simple, yet are doable and Constitutional. Don and Lois are willing to make the rather immodest claim that these ideas will improve both our personal lives and our Nation. The book is being released right at the beginning of the 2004 political season in the hope that we can find a champion somewhere in the political structure. The book's available on-line at both Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Besides the book, Don and Lois are enjoying semi-retirement in Westlake Village and stay in touch with several Vikings from their era of the 1940's.

My husband, Steen, and I have just returned from an extended vacation to the country of his birth, DENMARK. We traveled as a three generation family (ten people) in two cars, commuting between the cars with walkie-talkies. We visited family and friends, some of whom Steen served with in the Danish underground during WW II. This was a celebration of our 50th anniversary. Our children and grandchildren live in three states and it was truly a treasured time together. Steen and I are already beginning to plan another family vacation when we retire in a few years. Upon our return to Hawaii we once more began our volunteer work in the CG AUX, teaching, sailing and flying. Please keep the personal stories coming for the years 1943-1946. You have some excellent writers that seem to capture the intense feelings of those years. I came to SAMOHI from Wisconsin, and have warm memories of the brief friendships I made while a student there. The Viking News continues to provide interest that makes one proud of being an alumni. Thank You.

( class of 1948 ) I am Shirley D. Gutcher / Murphy (class of 1952)
Our 50th wedding anniversary would have been on 20 February 2003. John served
in the U.S. Army in the Korean conflict. We have three children and five grandchildren.
Our first great grandchild is due in March of 2003. He had hoped to hold off
the cancer long enough to celebrate our anniversary and to see his first great
grandchild. He loved golf and enjoyed the game with his friends. His best friend
George Nichol (class of 1948) since child hood and his wife Marlene Kennedy/
Nichol (class of 1953) remain our closest friends. Marlene and I met when we
were in the Sergeanettes in 1950/ 51. She introduced me to her boyfriends (George
Nichol) best friend John Murphy at the Redondo football game. John played baseball
and football at Samohi.
He retired from GTE in 1987. He was that rare individual " a good and honest
man". John loved all animals, particularly dogs. He will be deeply missed by
his family and friends..

Hello from Port Townsend, Washington
McLean, VA 22101
I was known as Paul Huntsberger during high school days. I'm very proud to be a Samohi alumnus. I am retired from teaching at The University of Texas at Austin and enjoying summers at my cabin in south-central Colorado. I would enjoy communicating with other members of the class of 1949. I have several hobbies: astronomy, 4-string banjo; 35mm photography; and birding. Mr. Max Silvernale, biology teacher, made a very permanent positive impression on me at Samohi and influenced much of success as a teacher.
I am married and have four children. I would love to hear from any of my old friends.

I met Paul David Jensen (Class of 44) while attending Santa Monica city College
and we were married in October of 1950 while attending Chinourd's Institute
of Art in Los Angeles. Paul was military so we lived in California, Washington,
Oklahoma, New Jersey, England, Hawaii, and Japan. While in living in Japan,
we were able to spend time in Korea, and Okinawa. After retirement from the
military we moved to Winton, California where I worked in the school system
as a Teacher's Aide. As a civilian civil servant, Paul was transfered back to
Fairchild AFB, Washinton for the period of 1980 - 1984. At Fairchild, we lived
on base and I worked as the Education Coordinator for the Base Chapel System.

My sister and I are entering this in memorium for our beloved
father, DAVID LOUIS KOHLER. He was a Santa Monica police officer

Many of you knew him better than we did, since we were only 6
and 7 years old when he died. My sister and I would love to hear
from anyone who knew our father. Please e-mail us. Thank you!
With much love ...

Hi to all 49'r. I'm well and healthy as 74 years can be. Playing jazz guitar in four different groups keeps me out of trouble. Due to retirement planning and dumb luck, I can now afford to be a "Starving Musician". With wife Lee (52 years) we travel a lot and play with our eight grandchildren. In June, 05 we will attend graduation ceremonies for our oldest, Tyler Burdick, Samohi '01, at U C Santa Cruz. then we will continue on to Yelm, Washington for Lee's 55th high school reunion.

Served as City Manager of South Pasadena, Baldwin Park, San Jacinto, and San Juan Capistrano. Was adjunct professor of Government in the Masters of Public Administration programs at both USC and Cal State Long Beach. Happy, healthy, and enjoying retirement.
I was salutatorian for the class of 1949 (the forty-niners), an editor of the Samohi paper and played flute in the band, marching in the Rose Parade with my brother who was two years ahead of me. I was more than a little disappointed that our 50th anniversary (1999) passed without any notice at all. I was told I would be welcome at the usual picnic! I hope some of my classmates are still around and that through the website I may find some of them. I am retired, but still busy after founding the department of Religious Studies at the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1981 and teaching there for 20 years. I also was a professor at Duke University (1973-81) and UCR (1969-73). My Ph.D. is from the University of Chicago (1970). It's been a good career and a good life and still is, I'm happy to say.
I can't believe I turned 70, It's scary. I married Loretta Gordon (52) and have three great kids and three grandkids. We retired in Las Vegas the entertainment center of the world. We love it!

We were married in 1954 and this year we are celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary. I am still practicing dentistry in Santa Monica and hope to retire in 20 years. Bill Werner
