library assistant at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, until felled by a stroke in Dec. 2000 which has permanently affected my left side--can't walk or use my left arm. Currently, I am living with my younger daughter in Colorado Springs. Most of the time I spend at home, on the computer and reading. My ties with Samohi are mainly with my family, two brothers Larry and Bruce and a sister-in-law Sue Maynard, and my closest friend from high school Harriet Green. I have a BA in History from CSUN and a masters in hist. I did an extensive amount of graduate work in Medieval Englis and Frtench literature at Cornell--but, no degree. |

Every year, on the Saturday before the 4th of July, the city of Santa Monica hosts a spectacular fireworks show. Unlike the old days when we had to trek down to the pier, the show is now held at Corsair Field on the campus of Santa Monica College. This year, several generations of Sahohi grads gathered at Jack and Betty Mayhew Barker's ('41) house for a barbeque. For almost than 60 years they have lived less than a block from the field so it seemed like a great location to hold a party topped off with fireworks.
As fate would have it, Mike Johnson (S '61) was visiting Santa Monica with his wife Bobbie. After graduation, Mike moved back to England and built a successful career with the BBC as a director and producer of live television. So we invited them to attend our shindig.
The attached picture shows all of the alums that were in attendance. From left to right they are Maxine Kanning Stenstrom (S '61), Barry Barker (S '61), Betty Kitashima (S '61), Caprice Workman Walker (S '61), Betty Mayhew Barker (S '41), Tom Barker ('76), Mike Johnson (S '61) and Allan Walker (W '50). We had a fabulous afternoon and evening and we look forward to more. |

I am still living in beautiful Naples, FL and love it. In Sept 03 I drove to Naples from our summer home in Ashland, KY and Rose Anne CAPATA Danyluk and Linda CHINNICI Worrall flew in from CA for a week of fun and to celebrate our 60th birthdays. We had a wonderful time and did all the things tourists do. It has been several years since the three of us had been together and we still had lots and lots to talk about. If you come to FL give me a call!

Been Married to my wonderful wife Sue for 34 years, and we have two grown sons (Todd 33 ) and (Jason 31 ) We have five grandkids. Live in Escondido for the last 15 years. I spent most of my working years in surgical supplies and equipment. Then I had a landscape contracting bussiness for the last ten years that I worked. Retired in 6/96, and have just been enjoying the good life. Playing golf, going to the gym, playing bridge, traveling, etc. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the reunion in May. I am living with my wife and nine year old daughter in the dense, fascinating city of Taipei. We have been here for almost five years. Before that we were in Alaska, where my wife and I met and where our daughter, Kaiyuh, was born. I am making my living as a writer, painter, editor and teacher. I recently co-wrote and published a new book. The title is, The Book Is Open. It is available through amazon.com. It is in the psychic, spiritual and metaphysical subject areas. I paint landscapes, cityscapes and abstracts and I teach and edit English. Warm regards to all! |

Married in 1964 to Gene Nitchman, Samo Class of '60. Gene's Army tour to Germany in 1966, gave us a chance to travel Europe while we were young. Returned to California in 1968, pregnant with our first child, Kevin.
Gene's graduation in 1970, Alison's arrival in 1971, the rest is history. Cannot believe how time has flown. All four of us work in Gene's CPA firm, real togetherness. We feel fortunate that work has not put stress on our marriage.
Have had a ball working on our 30th and 40th reunion committees. We both enjoy the reunions, he knows my friends, etc. Look forward to seeing everyone on May 19th!! We are happy that some classmates are returning after 40 years away, should be a fun evening. We're planning on attending the All Class Picnic for the first time, a whole day in Santa Monica. |

Milt Lyle "Butch" Farrand, Winter '61. Still living in Lompoc, CA working at Vandenberg Air Force Base. I was getting tired of California and thinking of moving to Montana, until I took up my latest passion - surfing. Now I'm here to stay.
I came accross an old roll of B&W film of a hootenany with Barry Barker, Jeff Marx, Willis Webb, Rosy Mittler, Nancy Farrand, myself, Nick Schmidt, Tish Blessing, Pierre Polianski, Sue Krotzer, Dave Dvorkin, Keith Rassmussen, Roger Bresnick and many more. I scanned them and will send them to anyone interested in them.
Is there going to be a 50th reunion??? |

I started my own PR & marketing firm ten years ago and really enjoy the challenge of being an entrepreneur. My husband, Stan, died about five years ago. Since then I've married off both my son, Malcolm, and my daughter, Jessica. Life is rich, particularly with the addition of a beautiful granddaughter named Isabella Rose. Who would have thought 40 years ago that any of us would have become grandparents?!

I've been more-or-less retired for several years up here in Silicon Valley, playing the role of older father (grandfather age, actually) to my kids, both under 7 years of age and pushing money around in various mutual funds, stocks and so on. Now that the kids are in school most of the day, I've decided to start a small record label, Faultline Records, which will release mainly jazz, blues and other eclectic musical forms. Stay tuned for Faultline's website, which will be up and running soon. Not much else to report--no homicides, amputations, group marriages, felony arrests or nervous breakdowns. Been with the same woman 18 years and even got married. That's a wrap. |

Great 40th reunion! Extremely energized at all of the great 57yr. old female bods (Laurie, Sandy, Carol, Nancy, Gail, Peggy, Donna, etc.) Everyone I talked to was exceptionally nice, and not too boring.
I live in Santa Clarita (30 years) with my wife and two sons (10&4). Have a small land development/construction company (16 years)in Valencia, and now work with my oldest boy (35), who recently married Rolly Sutton's youngest daughter. Still involved in sports (dirt & street bikes, golf, and some beach VB[when the knees are good], and watching the kids grow. Great Golden Years! |

Hello Everyone: Well, a lot has happened to me since 1961 but I suspect that is the case for most of us. I would really like to communicate with anyone who has an interest in emailing me so by all means, do not be bashful and write. I'd like to know how everyone is doing and will fill you in on details about my life after Samo if you wish me to do so. Take care and I look forward to seeing some of you at the next Class Reunion. |

After high school, four years in the Air Force. Married too early, divorced, remarried to a wonderful person. Five children between the two of us. After the Air Force went to work for a finance company for a brief fifteen years, the last thirteen years I've been with a large California based bank. I still play tennis and golf. Live in Northern California, inland, no beach, no surf. Miss the ocean but not the crowds. Recently I had a poem published. Anybody out there -- write anytime. |

Spring is in the air and plants are blooming all around us here in the Lake Isabella area. My daughter (Kelly MCCLOSKEY Lehman, Class of 81) and I are starting a new business together. It is fun working with your kid on an adult basis. We build and maintain web sites (check out kwb2.com). My husband Mike (class of 60) is hoping to retire within 4 years. Our son Kevin (class of 63) owns Riley's Bar in Bakersfield. He has also discovered Hawaii and travels there as often as possible.
Even though we have been living in Wofford Heights since 1982, we still have ties to, and fond memories of, Santa Monica. In fact, we have many people living around here who are from S.M., including Skip ROBINSON Knotts (winter class of 60), Lonnie ROBINSON Green (class of 61), Gary Green (class of 60), and Verne Reimers, to name a few, so we sometimes refer to this area as Santa Monica North. We have found that good friends are good friends, no matter where they live. And our friends from Santa Monica are the best! |

..thought I'd forward a photo of three of us from the Class of '61 who were fortunate enough to be in Washington DC at the same time on April 23 and thus reconnected. On the left is little ol' me, John Potterat, retired STD/HIV public health officer; in the middle is Dave DeVorkin (whom I had not seen in 41 years!) and who is, as the last issue of VIKING NEWS recorded (under Class of '61) the curator of astronomy at the Smithsonian...and has been for like 20 years (you know, the brainy but cool guitar-playing geek who carried several slide rules at Samohi, while the rest of us intellectual weaklings sneaked cigarettes on Pico and Ocean Park),; and on the right, Ron Boston, retired USAF pilot (including a stint as such in Death-Nam) and now cargo plane pilot to South American destinations, based in D.C.
..the Samohi umbilicus is a terrific way to reminisce and to stay connected... |

Stuart Purcell Included in Publication
ONE THOUSAND GREAT AMERICANS for 2002
For Excellence and Making the Country What It Is Today
San Rafael, CA, USA resident Stuart McLeod Purcell III added another lustrous jewel to his crowning achievements.
Stuart, Chairman of the Not-For-Profits.com Advisory Board, has been honored by the International Biographical Center of Cambridge England (IBC), by including him as One Thousand Great Americans for 2002. The announcement letter was received June 17, 2002 from Nicholas S. Law, Director General of the IBC.
"After thirty five years of continuous publishing, the International Biographical Center of Cambridge, England is justifiably proud of its research standing in the world today,” said Nicholas Law. “As Director General of the IBC, I have personally selected Stuart Purcell for this prestigious award as he is one who is eminently suitable for inclusion in this new work to be published by IBC throughout the world in mid 2002”
Stuart Purcell’s organization www.NotForProfits.com is in 200+ countries. In conjunction with the National Heritage Foundation, www.NotForProfits.com has its purpose to SOLVE FUNDING ISSUES FOR COMMUNITIES AROUND THE WORLD -- places of worship, schools, and non-profit civic activities -- UTILIZING INTERNET PROJECTS. It's mission is to BRING ENTREPRENEURS AND NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS TOGETHER TO BENEFIT COMMUNITIES AROUND THE WORLD. Jointly with Not-For-Profits.com Business Advisory Board Member Joe Zedalis of Bellevue, WA, USA, they launched a project which will take 'education about fundraising on the Internet' to the next level.
“We must do more than simply donate money or goods to these causes. Instead we intend to arm worthy big and small non-profits around the world with proven means to meet their needs this year, next year and well into the future". "What we are doing", Mr. Purcell added "has never been done or even attempted before. Utilizing the Internet, we've created a 'New Platform' to benefit non-profits, their supporters and those they serve."
Purcell's theme is, "There's nothing more rewarding than reaching out and assisting others assist themselves."
The International Biographical Center and its associates have been in existence for an unbroken period of more than thirty years. During three decades the IBC has published 30 major International Who's Who titles in well over 150 separate editions, including in aggregate, some 1,200,000 biographies and 150,000 portrait photographs in 90,000 pages containing 120 million words.
IBC states that all titles are compiled without political, racial or religious bias and are of genuine International interest to researchers, students, and enthusiasts alike. Entry into their biographical reference books is by invitation of the editorial advisory board only and cannot be "bought". For more information on the IBC, visit the company’s web site at www.melrosepress.co.uk
Since 1993 Purcell has received three highly distinguished awards from IBC and is listed in 9 separate biographical reference book titles.

Hope all is well in Santa Monica. It was a great place to grow up in the 50's and 60's. (Although I couldn't stand living there now - not a small, quiet town feeling anymore.) I look forward to visiting my classmates and friends over the coming years - both at reunions and in between. Peace, Jim |

I have been a member of the alumni association for several years. I own my own business in Santa Monica. It is a medical personnel business. We supply employees to doctors offices, clinic, insurance companies, HMO's and hospitals. I have a staff of 5 full time employees and 4 part time. I am now in my 8th year in business. We have our own web site at www.ronnicoopermedical.com. It is currently under construction but should be completed very soon. It will offer many of our job listings.
I have 2 sons Greg 25 and Brad 23. Brad just graduated from UCLA with a bachelors degree in English and is looking for a job in the entertainment industry. His dream is to work in story editing in an animation department. Greg is enrolled at SMC to finish his lower division units and hopes to transfer to UCLA in the spring. He was married last summer and his wife is hoping to go to vet school. Please add my e mail address to the others in the viking news and let me know when my advertising is up for renewal so I can send a check to keep my business card in the viking news.
My brother Bob Schnider '63 is a superior court commissioner in downtown LA in the family law section. His son David is getting married this July and is completing his second year of law school. His other son Daniel gradutaed in June from UCSB and is hoping to get a job in an entertainment agency. I see several class mates from samohi: Lynda Kliegman Boyer who works in the commerical section of Coldwell Banker, my cousin Jeff Marx who works in the computer field, Judy Adler Kaye '62 who has her own court reporting business, Barry Barker & Betty Kitshima who have a consulting business, and several others. |

After being in the teaching field for over 30 years, I decided it was time to retire. My husband Abe and I are having lots of fun travelling and working in the garden. I am learning about quilting. I have made about 4 so far. I have been involved with a performing dance group for about 10 years, and we perform in different venues around the Bay Area. Both of my sons live in the immediate vicinity, which makes me very happy. I am also a director of an adult dance camp in Mendocino, and that keeps me pretty busy. I guess you could say my life is pretty full, all of it very enjoyable. |

After graduating from Cal, I joined the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ, with whom I've been with for 40 years. I married Betsy in 1969, earned a master's degree in New Testament (1973) and did post graduate work in Germany (1981-1983), when we lived overseas (Ireland, Austria and Germany) between 1974 and 1988, traveling behind the Iron Curtain, serving churches and Christians who were harrassed, discriminated against and sometimes physically persecuted for their faith. We have three children and three grandchildren, two of whom were born overseas. Since returning to the U.S., we continue to work with and serve Christians in the academic community, encouraging them to be more up-front and appropriately "out-loud" about their faith perspectives and we also engage those outside of the Christian tradition in dialogue and conversations about life, faith and Jesus Christ.

After graduation from SamoHi, I spent three years in the Navy as a submarine sonarman listening to underwater things like shrimp, whales and propellers. After that I was accepted to the U.S. Naval Academy graduating in 1968 and commissioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. Five years later I was medically retired due to an accident while in the service. I have been married to my dear, dear wife(Karen) for 30 years and have three great children - two boys, 27 and 23, and a daughter of 21. We live in Columbus, Ohio and I am the President and CEO of GreatLand Insurance Company, a subsidiary of Kemper Insurance. I have a class picture of Fall 1950, Teacher Mrs. Willens, Grade A1-B2. There are no names, just shining little faces. Just a stab in the dark!
On another note, had an old flame that left Uni and went to Samohi. Anyone know Tere Trimble??? |

Like my friend, Bob Brann (above), I graduated from Uni, but attended Samohi during the summers. I met the one, real, true love of my life during a summer session at Samohi. (Should have married her, but didn’t and I’ve been sorry ever since). My parents taught at Samohi for years. My mother was Rose Alice (Wagner) Smith who taught music from the 40’s to the mid-50’s, and my step-father, Grant Smith, taught machine shop. Some of my earliest memories were going to Samohi with my mother and playing on the campus. It was like home to me. My parents and I both had many very good, life long friends who went to Samohi. It’s a tremendous school with a wonderful, long history. |

Started working @ Litton Industries in 1959 while attending SMCC. I had dropped out to help mother support younger brother but enrolled in SMCC to obtain my HS diploma. I needed to go on for a higher education, and I was given my diploma from SAMO I went on to obtain a BS in Mechanical Engineering, and BS in Electrical Engineering. I was fortunate to have joined a Company whose educational benefits were quite liberal.
I worked for Litton for over 30 years before suffering a rather minor heart attack in 1987, while working as Director of Qualiy Assurance at Applied Technology, Sunnyvale.
I returned to Guidance and Controls Division in 1987 to write Software for Mil-Std-2000, and left the Company entirely in 1989. |
