Brief Curriculum Vitae, F. Nowell Jones, Samohi 1930
(A listing under my full Legal name- Fred Nowell Jones, Jr, can be found in the 3rd and 4th Editions of Who's Who in the World) .
Born, Santa Monica, CA. August 16, 1912
Education: Samohi, Class of 1930. While there the 1930 Nautilus reads; Commissioner of Finance 4: Ephbians 4; Scholarship Associates 2; Varsity Debate 4; Tennis 2, 3, 4; Chess Club 2; Tennis Manager 3; Letterman's Club 4; Refreshment Committee, Sophomore Skip, 2.
B.A. (Honors in Psychology) UCLA, 1934, M. A. UCLA, 1937; Ph.D. Cornell University, 1939.
Social Fraternity: Theta Chi
Honorary Societies: Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Gamma Mu, Psi Chi
Professional Societies: American Association for the Advancement of Science (Life Fellow); American Psychological Association (Fellow); Institute of Food Technologists (Emeritus Member).
Employment History: Taught at University of Alabama (Acting Chairman one year), University of Wisconsin, Washington State College (Founding Chairman), UCLA (Chairman 1962-1970). Current Title, Professor of Psychology Emeritus. There were also stints in industry at Bridgeport Brass Company, and Lockheed
Professional Activities: Committees of American Psychological Association, First Secretary-Treasurer of the Washington State Psychological Association, National Institute of Mental Health, Quartermaster Corps, Veterans Administration, and one NATO International Conference. Recently I have been serving on an United Way Committee evaluating grant requests.
(Since almost no one reads journal articles anyway, I spare you my bibliography.)
P.S. One advantage of the Academic life is the number of meetings one can attend in many places. I have been privileged to attend scientific meetings in such places as Istanbul, Cannes, Dundee, Reading,
Utrecht, and Beijing, and to have a visit to Chile on University business (before Allende).
Marriage: I married Margaret Russel Hubbard of Fairfield, Ct. in 1939. Her education included a BA from Vassar, an MA from Hobart, and a Ph.D. from UCLA. Unfortunately, she suffered a fatal heart attack in July of 1998. (Aside remark- When the Nautilus had a circus theme in 1930, thanks to Principal Barnum, little did I guess I would marry the great-granddaughter of P, T. Barnum's private physician!) Her last professional title was Professor of Human Factors Emerita at the University of Southern California.
Hobbies: Sailing (Peg and I won more than 60 trophies also cruising the Chesapeake, Virgin Islands, British Columbia, and the English Broads), camping (thanks to marrying an outdoor girl), classical Music, and birding (now in remission).
Offspring: One daughter and seven grandchildren, one great-grandson. All have the surname "Arnold." |

| Jane FACH Neilson |
|
Posted 09/12/09 |
Deceased
Jane Neilson Fach passed peacefully on May 9, 2009 at her home in Tehachapi, CA, at the grand age of 93. She was born Ada Jane Neilson on March 11, 1916 to Mr. and Mrs. George Andrew (Ada Clark) Neilson in Santa Monica, CA, where she attended public schools before enrolling at UCLA. She met Theodore Beach Fach (1932), her husband of 53 years, while working at California Bank in Santa Monica and raised three great children. Jane was active in PEO and family genealogy, along with her favorite pastimes of working crossword puzzles and reading.
Jane was preceded in death by Ted on June 19, 1993 and by her eldest child, Capt. Christopher Neilson Fach, USAF, (1959) on October 19, 1969. She is survived by her son David John Fatch (1961) of Ukiah, CA, her daughter Dorothy Louise Fach (Mrs. Wolfgang) Friedmann (1963) of Tehachapi, CA and her grandchildren Robin Suzanne Fatch and Andrew John Fatch. She had wanted to stay around until at least 102 years but decided it was time and she was ready.
A private service was held at the Masonic Plot of Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica on May 18, 2009.
The family asks that contributions be sent to your local caregiver organization. These ladies were a godsend in Jane last days. Also, the family asks that you raise your glass of her favorite, Cuervo Gold, in tribute to a wonderful lady. |

Thanks Vikings, for the great job in keeping us informed. Hated leaving my home in Tiburon where I spent nearly 30 great years....but, time does march on and I chose to "walk" out rather than the alternative. I'm
in a retirement community which is truly beautiful. No wonder Luther Burbank
settled here in order to invent the potato!
My warmest regards to all.

I'm lucky. I have a good life, two successful, supportive, loving daughters. I followed one of my daughters to Park City about 7 years ago and got used to the snow very quickly. In about one and a half years I will be moving to Las Vegas. I spent several years at Litton Industries (now Northrop Grumman) as a purchasing lobby receptionist and loved every minute of it. I have been practical and realistic during my life and my present Board presidency for the Senior Center. My sister is Irene Cordes--she passed away three years ago and left two children. |

My father was a member of the class of '39, and as his son I thought I would let those who may remember him know that Robert 'Bob' Danaher passed away on January, 26th, 2008. I have his high school annual and if the School's historical library wishes to keep it on file. Perhaps if there is a display somewhere and a copy or additional copy is needed I would be happy to donate his copy. Robert Danaher Track 2,3 Lettermen's Club 2,3 is featured on the first page of the Winter Senor class on the lower left side of the page. |

| Mary WADE Curtis |
|
|
Deceased
Mary Wade Curtis passed away rather suddenly in March of 2008 after a very short bout with a cancerous tumor of the brain. She died in Los Alamitos Memorial Hospital in California surrounded at her bedside by her loving family. Mary was born in Ute, Iowa on July 11, 1922 to Chester and Ruth Wade. She was 85 years old when she passed away. Although her given name was Mary she preferred to be called Billie by her friends and relatives. She came by the name ´Billie¡ because her parents called her their little Billie Girl when she was a baby. The Wade family moved to Santa Monica in 1936 at which time Billie became a student at SAMOHI. Billie was much admired for her natural beauty, which was more than just skin deep; it radiated from deep within. Everyone who ever knew her loved her. After graduating from SAMOHI with the summer class of ‘39 she attended SMJC and worked for the Telephone Co. in Santa Monica. In later years she worked part time for The Broadway in Torrance for 10 years. She retired from The Broadway in 1986. In 1943 she married Les Curtis who was also a SAMOHI graduate of the summer class of ‘39. Together they had three children: Carol Trenary of Cypress, California; Donna Slingerland of San Ramon, California and Bill Curtis of Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Billie was preceded in death by her son Bill Curtis in January 2003, her husband Les Curtis in April 2003 and her brother Chet Wade in October 2007. In addition to the two daughters mentioned above, Billie is survived by a brother, Ron Wade; 8 grandchildren (6 boys and 2 girls) plus 5 great grandchildren. After the death of her husband Billie lived alone in her house in Torrance, California until she passed away unexpectedly in March of 2008. She was an immaculate housekeeper and from the time she became a widow until she passed away she kept the inside and outside of her home in beautiful condition. Everyone who knew her considered this a remarkable accomplishment especially for a woman in her eighties. Billie kept in touch with several of her surviving SAMOHI classmates of 1939. One of which was her brother in law, Bud Gaston, who lives in Spokane, Washington. Bud had been married to her husband’s sister (Marcia Curtis ‘39) for 57 years. Billie also maintained a close relationship with Edna and Merrill Clark ‘39 meeting with them regularly at a restaurant in Palos Verdes, CA.
To Billie Curtis ´Valhalla may you join the brave who have died, and those who have died bravely! |
